Peacock Shrub Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A rare and striking ornamental hybrid, Caesalpinia gilliesii × spinosa combines the exotic flowering display of C. gilliesii with the exceptional drought tolerance and structural strength of C. spinosa.

The result is a vigorous shrub with elegant fern like foliage, long colourful stamens, and impressive resilience in hot, dry, and exposed sites.

This hybrid forms an upright, airy framework that produces clusters of soft yellow blooms accented by dramatic red filaments. Its fine textured foliage casts dappled shade and moves beautifully in the breeze, making it a standout feature for gravel and architectural planting schemes.

Once established, it thrives with minimal care and copes well with poor soils and coastal conditions.

Sowing Instructions
Scarify seeds lightly with sandpaper or soak in warm water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing. Sow individually into pots of moist, free draining compost and cover lightly with fine soil. Maintain temperatures between 20 and 25°C and keep the compost just slightly moist. Germination can be irregular and benefits from steady warmth. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on in bright, warm conditions. Move outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed.

Grow and Maintenance
Provide full sun and lean, well drained soil for best performance. Water sparingly, as this hybrid prefers dry conditions once established. Feed lightly during the growing season to support flowering. Prune in early spring to shape and encourage branching. In cooler climates, overwinter container grown plants indoors or in a frost free greenhouse. With maturity, Caesalpinia gilliesii × spinosa becomes highly drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance.
