Passion Flower Caerulea RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Passiflora caerulea, commonly known as Blue Passionflower, is a stunning, exotic-looking climbing vine that produces striking, large flowers in shades of blue, white, and purple, with a unique, intricate structure. Its showy blooms, combined with its lush green foliage, make it an eye-catching addition to any garden, trellis, or pergola. Known for its dramatic, tropical appearance, Passiflora caerulea thrives in sunny spots and is ideal for adding a vibrant focal point to garden walls or fences.

The genus Passiflora is derived from the Latin "passio" (passion) and "flos" (flower), referring to the symbolism of the plant in Christian iconography, where the flower represents the Passion of Christ. Caerulea refers to the plant’s blue-hued flowers, a characteristic that sets this species apart from other members of the genus.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Passiflora caerulea is a hardy and reliable climber, suitable for UK gardens, especially in milder climates. This vigorous vine not only produces spectacular flowers but also bears edible fruit in warmer conditions. It is a popular choice for attracting pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and adds a touch of the tropics to outdoor spaces.

This variety can grow to a height of 6 - 9 metres, making it ideal for creating vertical interest in gardens, as a ground cover, or as a climber on fences, arbors, or pergolas. It can also be grown in containers, provided it has a support structure for its climbing nature.

Passiflora caerulea is a relatively low-maintenance climber once established, though it benefits from being watered regularly during dry periods. It is important to provide support for its vigorous growth, such as a trellis or other vertical structures. Pruning is generally not required, but it can be trimmed to control its size and shape. In colder regions, it may need winter protection or be grown in containers and moved indoors during frost.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination rates. Lightly press seeds into the surface, and maintain a temperature of 20-25°C for optimal germination. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil from April to May, once the soil has warmed. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 30 - 40 cm apart for healthy growth.

With its exotic beauty and dramatic blooms, Passiflora caerulea is a wonderful addition to any garden, especially for those looking to add height and tropical flair. Its ease of care and ability to attract pollinators make it a great choice for a variety of garden settings.
