Seed Qty Approx 200

Sow February to May in a deep, fertile bed; germination can be slow, so patience is needed.
Germination 10 to 28 days in warm, steady conditions.
Soil and Position Prefers deep, fertile loam or sandy soil; tolerant of acidic, alkaline, or neutral conditions. Best in full sun. Avoid fresh manure and use ground manured for a previous crop.
Height Root crop; foliage typically 30 to 60 cm.
Harvest September to March. Lift as required once foliage begins to die down; flavour improves after frost. Cure briefly in a cool, dry place if storing.

Sowing instructions

Depth and spacing: Sow thinly 1 to 1.5 cm deep in drills, rows 30 cm apart. Do not transplant. Thin to 10 cm for full sized roots. Keep soil evenly moist to support slow, steady germination.
Timing: Sow February to May. For best germination, use fresh seed each season and avoid compacted soils. Early spring sowings may be slower to emerge in cool conditions.

Grow and maintenance

Soil prep: Choose deep, stone free soil; parsnips fork in compacted or stony ground. Enrich beds in autumn, but avoid fresh manure in spring to prevent soft, misshapen roots.
Care: Water during dry spells to prevent check in growth. Allow roots to remain in the ground through early frosts to develop sweeter flavour before lifting.
Health: Gladiator F1 shows good canker resistance, aiding clean, storeworthy roots.

Uses and benefits

Culinary: Excellent roasted, boiled, or mashed; sweet, nutty flavour that intensifies after frost. A good source of vitamin C and a staple for winter cooking.
Storage: Lift as needed or store lifted roots in a cool, dark, ventilated place for extended use through winter.
