Oregano Greek Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A vigorous perennial culinary herb with aromatic bright green, slightly hairy leaves and a strong, spicy flavour. Greek Oregano is the classic variety most often used in Mediterranean cooking, prized for its intensity and depth of taste.

It produces an abundance of small white flowers in summer, which are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in pots, containers, or directly in the garden, making it a versatile addition to both ornamental and kitchen plantings.

Seed Qty Approx 1500

Sow March to August under cover or directly outdoors.
Germination 14 to 21 days in warm, steady conditions.
Soil and Position Prefers well drained loam, sandy, or chalk soils; tolerant of acidic, alkaline, or neutral conditions. Best in full sun.
Height Approx 45 to 60 cm; bushy, spreading habit.
Harvest Leaves can be picked fresh throughout the growing season and dried for winter use.
Good Companions Beans, broccoli, tomatoes, and other Mediterranean herbs.
Avoid Pairing With Plants that require heavy shade or consistently wet soil.

Sowing Instructions

Sow thinly on the surface of moist compost from March to August. Lightly press seeds into the soil but do not cover, as light aids germination. Keep evenly moist until seedlings establish. Transplant or thin to 20–30 cm spacing. Suitable for pots, containers, or open ground.

Grow and Maintenance

Grow in full sun in free draining soil. Water moderately, avoiding waterlogging. Trim plants regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent flowering if leaves are the main harvest. In colder regions, provide winter protection or grow in pots that can be moved indoors.

Uses and Benefits

A staple of Mediterranean cuisine, Greek Oregano is essential for pizzas, pasta sauces, grilled meats, and tomato dishes. Fresh or dried leaves add a robust, aromatic flavour. The summer flowers attract pollinators, making it both a culinary and ecological asset in the garden.
