Omphalodes Linifolia RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Omphalodes linifolia commonly known as Blue-eyed Mary, is a charming and low-growing perennial that produces a profusion of bright, sky-blue flowers with contrasting white centres. This delicate beauty is perfect for adding a splash of colour to shady spots, woodland gardens, or along the edges of borders. With its attractive foliage and vibrant blooms, Omphalodes linifolia is ideal for creating a soft, natural look in your garden.

The genus Omphalodes derives from the Greek word "omphalos," meaning "navel," referring to the central eye of the flowers. Linifolia is from the Latin "linum," meaning "flax," and "folium," meaning "leaf," referring to its narrow, flax-like leaves. The plant’s unique flowers, resembling little blue stars, are an excellent choice for shady areas where they will add colour and texture.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Omphalodes linifolia is a reliable and easy-to-grow plant, prized for its long-lasting blooms and attractive foliage. It is particularly popular for use in shaded or woodland gardens and makes a great companion for ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving plants.

Growing to a height of 30 - 40 cm, Omphalodes linifolia is perfect for planting at the front of borders, in containers, or under trees where it can thrive in dappled or partial shade. It is also excellent as ground cover, helping to suppress weeds while offering an eye-catching display of flowers.

Omphalodes linifolia is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in shaded areas with cool, moist conditions. Once established, it requires little care, although regular watering during dry periods will help it flourish. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms, and the plant can be divided every few years to maintain vigour.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to May. Lightly press the seeds into the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil from April to June. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to a spacing of 25 - 30 cm for healthy growth.

With its vibrant blue flowers and ease of care, Omphalodes linifolia is a perfect choice for brightening up shaded areas of the garden. Its ability to thrive in low-light conditions and its attractive foliage make it a valuable addition to any shade-loving plant collection.
