Nasturtium Tip Top Velvet Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Add a splash of deep, luxurious colour to your garden with Nasturtium Tip Top Velvet.

A compact hardy annual celebrated for its rich velvety crimson blooms held above vibrant green foliage. This bushy variety forms neat clumps that flower freely all summer, making it a striking choice for borders, patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. Both flowers and leaves are edible, adding a peppery zest to salads and garnishes, while also attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Seed Qty Approx 25

Sow March to May indoors for earlier displays, or sow directly outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.
Germination 7–10 days in warm, steady conditions; seeds germinate best when kept evenly moist at a consistent temperature.
Soil and Position Thrives in moderately fertile, well?drained soil; tolerates a wide range of soil types from slightly acidic to alkaline. Prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade.
Height Approx 30 cm; compact bushy habit ideal for edging and containers.
Flowering June to September with a long season of bold crimson blooms; regular deadheading encourages continuous flowering.
Good Companions Beans, brassicas, tomatoes, and mixed herb or flower containers.

Sowing Instructions

Sow three or four seeds into individual pots on a sunny windowsill from March to May, or sow directly into prepared soil after the last frost. Cover seeds very lightly or press onto the compost surface.

Keep evenly moist and warm until seedlings emerge. Pot on or prick out when large enough to handle, then harden off and plant out, spacing 20–30 cm apart for best effect.

Grow and Maintenance
Grow in full sun in free draining soil and water regularly while establishing. Avoid over fertilising, as this encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong the display and maintain a tidy habit. Plants may self seed if allowed, adding naturalised colour in following seasons.

Uses and Benefits

Perfect for pots, baskets, window boxes, and low borders. Flowers and leaves are edible, adding a decorative peppery note to salads and platters. Pollinator friendly and easy to grow, Tip Top Velvet provides a bold splash of crimson that contrasts beautifully with silver or pale toned foliage.
