  • Description

A dramatic nasturtium with velvety deep burgundy blooms that trail beautifully from beds, baskets and containers.

Nasturtium Purple Emperor is a dramatic and beautifully coloured variety that produces velvety blooms in deep shades of burgundy, plum and rich wine red.

The flowers have a soft luxurious texture that stands out against the fresh green foliage, creating a bold contrast that brings depth and richness to summer displays. Each bloom has a slightly ruffled shape that adds movement and charm to the plants.

This striking variety is ideal for gardeners who want something a little different from the usual bright nasturtium colours. The plants have a compact trailing habit that works perfectly in hanging baskets, window boxes, raised beds and the front of borders. As the stems spill over edges, they create a flowing cascade of dark blooms that continues throughout the summer.

Nasturtium Purple Emperor is easy to grow and thrives in poorer soils, making it a reliable choice for low maintenance planting. The flowers are edible and add a peppery flavour to salads, while the leaves can also be used as a garnish. Bees and other pollinators visit the blooms regularly, adding wildlife value to their ornamental appeal.

Sow April to June outdoors
Germination 7 to 14 days at 15 to 20°C
Soil and Position Poor to moderately fertile free draining soil in full sun
Height and Spread 25 to 35 cm tall, 40 to 60 cm spread
Flowering June to October

Sowing instructions
Sow seeds directly where they are to flower or start indoors in small pots of moist free draining compost. Cover lightly with soil and keep evenly moist until seedlings appear. If sowing indoors, transplant young plants carefully to avoid root disturbance. Harden off gradually and plant out after the last frost.

Grow and maintenance
Water during dry spells but avoid overfeeding, as rich soil encourages foliage at the expense of flowers. Remove spent blooms to prolong flowering. Allow the plants to trail naturally or guide stems over the edges of pots and baskets. Nasturtiums thrive in sunny positions and require very little care once established.
