Mesembryanthemum Livingstone Daisy Mix Seeds

A colourful mix of Livingstone daisies producing masses of cheerful, succulent backed flowers in a vibrant range of pinks, oranges, reds, yellows and whites.

 

Ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, sunny containers and low borders where a dry, free draining splash of long lasting seasonal colour is wanted.

 

Plants form low, matting cushions of fleshy leaves that tolerate drought and shine in hot, sunny positions.

Sow March to May under cover for early plants; April to June for direct sowing

Germination 10 to 21 days at 15 to 20°C; seeds benefit from light so surface sow or cover very thinly

Soil Very free draining gritty or sandy soil or multi purpose compost with added sharp sand; neutral to slightly alkaline; avoid heavy moisture retentive soils

Height 5 to 15 cm; spread 20 to 40 cm depending on variety and growing conditions

Flowering Late spring through summer into autumn in warm, sunny sites; flowers open in bright sun and may close in dull weather

Good Companions Sedums; santolina; thyme; lavender; low alpine and drought tolerant perennials

 

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Surface sow thinly into trays or modules March to May and press seeds gently onto the compost surface without covering; keep at 15 to 20°C and maintain even, light moisture. Prick out carefully when large enough to handle and grow on in a warm, sunny position before planting out after all risk of frost.

 

For direct sowing choose April to June in a prepared, free draining bed and thin to 15 to 30 cm apart for a spreading carpet. Avoid overwatering seedlings and provide good air circulation.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Plant in full sun in very free draining soil and water sparingly once established; tolerate drought but dislike winter wet. Mulch with grit in heavier soils to improve drainage and lift or protect plants in very wet winters. Trim back after the main flowering flush to encourage fresh growth and remove any winter damaged growth in spring. Excellent for low maintenance displays, gravel gardens and sunny container planting; allow some seed set if you want self sown plants in following seasons.
