Liquorice Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

This tall perennial culinary and medicinal herb has bright green ferny foliage with pretty purple and white flowers.

This plant is well worth growing but requires patience as it takes three years before harvesting the root is possible.

The root is an antioxidant and an anti imflammatory and may help ease respiratory problems.

Sow March - May or September - October

Germination 14 - 21 days

Deep moist well drained soil not heavy clay soil

Height 90cm - 120cm

Harvest August -October

Grow in beds and borders, pots and containers

Use raw or dried in baking or tea's

Pre soak the seed the night before.

Sow thinly onto a tray of moist compost covering lightly. Keep the temperature between 20° - 25°. Keep the compost on the dry side watering the tray from the bottom.

Germination can be slow.

When the seedings are large enough to handle pot into 5cm pots or seed tray 2cm apart to grow on.

Plant into their final flowering postition, large pots are perfect for liquorice as harvesting the root is made easier.

Or a sunny border.

Harvest the root after the third year by digging up the plant and cutting pieces off the root then burying again to grow on.
