Lettuce Salad Bowl Red And Green - Irish Plants Direct

Lactuca sativa is a vibrant and colourful blend of tender, leafy lettuce varieties that produce an attractive mix of red and green leaves.

The genus Lactuca, derived from the Latin lac meaning "milk," refers to the milky sap released when the leaves are cut. Sativa indicates its cultivated nature. This mix is known for its mild flavour, tender texture, and beautiful contrasting colours, making it an excellent choice for salads and garnishes.

Whether harvested young for baby leaves or left to mature, the leaves maintain a crisp, delicate texture that adds both beauty and flavour to any dish.

Reaching a height of 25-30 cm, Lettuce Salad Bowl Red and Green grows quickly and forms a loose, open head with a mix of vibrant green and reddish-burgundy leaves.

This variety is perfect for cutting-and-coming-again, allowing for continuous harvests throughout the growing season. It is also a great option for smaller gardens, raised beds, or containers, where its colourful leaves can be harvested at various stages for fresh salad mixes.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds outdoors from March to August in moist, well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds thinly across the soil surface and gently press them in. Do not cover, as lettuce seeds need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which should take 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to around 25-30 cm apart once they are large enough to handle.

For an earlier harvest, sow indoors from January to March. Sow in trays or pots with moist, well-drained compost, keeping at a temperature of 15-18°C. Once seedlings are large enough, transplant them outdoors after the last frost, spacing them 25-30 cm apart.

Lettuce Salad Bowl Red and Green thrives in full sun or partial shade, with regular watering essential to keep the soil moist but well-drained. Since this variety is cut-and-come-again, you can harvest outer leaves as needed, allowing the plant to continue producing fresh growth. A balanced fertiliser will promote healthy, leafy growth, but avoid over-fertilising, as this can affect the flavour and texture.

This colourful and easy-to-grow lettuce mix is perfect for gardeners seeking a fresh, vibrant addition to their salads. Lettuce Salad Bowl Red and Green provides both flavour and aesthetic appeal, offering a continuous supply of tender, nutritious leaves throughout the season.
