This easy-to-grow, resilient vegetable thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and tolerates frost, improving in flavour after exposure to cold weather. The mix includes curly green, red, and Russian-style kales, providing a nutrient-dense and visually appealing crop.

Germination: 7 – 14 days

Soil: Well-drained, fertile, organically enriched soil

Height: 40 – 90 cm (varies by variety)

Avoid Planting With: Strawberries, Tomatoes

 

This low-maintenance crop requires regular watering, particularly in dry spells, and benefits from mulching with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pick outer leaves regularly for a continuous harvest, allowing the plant to keep producing fresh growth.

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Outdoors:

Sow directly into prepared organic soil from May to July Sow thinly in rows 1 cm deep, spacing plants 40 cm apart. Water well and thin seedlings once established.

 

Indoors (for transplanting):

Sow March- April in seed trays or modules 6–8 weeks before planting out. Once seedlings develop two true leaves, harden off and transplant to their final position, spacing them 40 cm apart in nutrient-rich organic compost.
