Foxglove Suttons Apricot RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Digitalis purpurea 'Suttons Apricot', a striking biennial, is celebrated for its tall spires of soft apricot-pink bell-shaped flowers with delicate freckled throats. This enchanting variety brings a romantic elegance to any garden and is a favourite among pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.

The genus name Digitalis comes from the Latin word for "finger," referencing the glove-like shape of the blooms. The cultivar ‘Suttons Apricot’ is cherished for its unique colour palette, which softens traditional cottage garden schemes and complements both pastel and bold planting combinations.

As part of the RHS seed scheme, Suttons Apricot ensures high-quality, reliable germination. Its towering presence makes it a perfect choice for adding height and drama to mixed borders, wildflower meadows, or woodland edges.

This hardy biennial prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Growing to an impressive height of 120 - 150 cm, it pairs beautifully with other tall, stately plants for a layered garden effect.

Foxglove Suttons Apricot is a low-maintenance gem. Deadhead after the first flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms, or allow seed heads to form for natural self-seeding. Note that all parts of this plant are toxic if ingested.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of 15-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil from May to July. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface, pressing gently for good contact. Water lightly and keep moist until germination. Thin seedlings to a spacing of 30 cm for robust growth.

With its captivating blooms and towering height, Foxglove Suttons Apricot brings a timeless charm to any garden. Whether in naturalistic plantings or formal designs, its soft apricot tones and graceful form are sure to inspire.
