Echinacea White Swan RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan' is a stunning perennial that offers striking white flowers with a contrasting golden centre, perfect for adding brightness and elegance to any garden.

The name Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning "hedgehog," referring to the spiny central cone of the flower. Purpurea, the species name, is Latin for "purple," referring to the typical colour of the species, though White Swan is a pure white cultivar.

This variety is known for its large, pure white petals that gracefully surround the prominent, yellow-orange cone, making it a standout feature in flower beds or borders. It not only adds visual appeal but also attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in your garden.

Echinacea White Swan reaches a height of 60 - 90 cm, making it ideal for the middle or back of borders, cutting gardens, or prairie-style plantings.

This hardy perennial thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and prefers full sun, where its blooms can reach their full potential. It flowers from mid-summer to autumn, providing a long-lasting display of elegant, daisy-like flowers that continue to bloom for weeks.

As part of the RHS Seed Scheme, Echinacea White Swan offers high-quality seeds with excellent germination and strong plant growth, ensuring reliable, healthy plants year after year.

Echinacea White Swan is relatively low-maintenance once established. Regular watering during dry spells will keep the plants healthy, and deadheading spent flowers encourages continuous blooming. The strong stems of this variety also make it an excellent cut flower, ideal for use in floral arrangements.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from January to March. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for healthy growth.

Echinacea White Swan is perfect for adding a graceful touch to your garden. Its elegant white blooms and long flowering period make it ideal for borders, wildlife gardens, or as part of a cutting garden to enjoy the beauty indoors.
