Dianthus Deltoides RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Dianthus deltoides, commonly known as the Maiden Pink, is a charming, low-growing perennial that adds a burst of colour and beauty to any garden. With its delicate, fragrant flowers in shades of pink this variety makes a delightful addition to rock gardens, ground covers, or borders.

The name Dianthus is derived from the Greek words dios meaning "divine" and anthos meaning "flower," reflecting the plant's exquisite blooms. Deltoides, Latin for "shaped like a triangle," refers to the distinctive triangular shape of the plant’s leaves, which further enhance its ornamental appeal.

This compact perennial grows to a height of 15 - 30 cm, forming a low, spreading mat that is perfect for filling gaps in the garden or as a colourful edging plant.

Dianthus deltoides thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and enjoys full sun, where its blooms can truly shine. Flowering from early to mid-summer, it attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, creating a vibrant, fragrant environment in your garden.

As part of the RHS Seed Scheme, Dianthus deltoides offers high-quality seeds for reliable germination and healthy growth, ensuring a beautiful display year after year.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from January to March. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for healthy growth.

Dianthus deltoides is perfect for adding a splash of colour and fragrance to your garden. With its vibrant flowers and low-growing habit, it’s an ideal choice for filling borders, edging pathways, or creating a colourful ground cover in sunny areas.
