Cosmos Velouette Seed

A striking cosmos with deep crimson and white striped blooms on upright airy stems creating bold movement and colour from early summer to autumn.

 

Cosmos Velouette is an award winning annual producing large daisy like flowers in a dramatic mix of deep red crimson and clear white with some blooms striped and others edged in contrasting tones giving a lively hand painted effect in the garden.

 

Plants grow upright with finely divided fern like foliage and reach sixty to ninety centimetres depending on soil and position creating a soft airy structure that moves beautifully in the breeze.

 

The flowers are rich in nectar and pollen and attract bees butterflies and many other pollinating insects making this variety ideal for wildlife friendly gardens

Velouette thrives in full sun and moist but well drained soil and flowers freely from early summer into autumn when regularly deadheaded.

 

Its long stems and distinctive colour pattern make it an excellent cut flower for bold summer arrangements.

Sowing and planting

Sow indoors from March to April or outdoors from April to May

Germination takes approximately fourteen to twenty one days at temperatures between fifteen and twenty degrees Celsius

Grow in moist but well drained loam chalk or sandy soil in full sun

Flowers from June to October

 

Sowing instructions

Sow on the surface of moist compost and cover lightly with fine soil

Grow on in bright warm conditions then harden off before planting outdoors after frost risk has passed

For direct sowing scatter thinly over prepared soil and cover lightly

Space plants around twenty five to thirty centimetres apart for strong upright growth

Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering

Pinch out young tips to encourage bushier plants

Water during prolonged dry spells but avoid overwatering

Support may be helpful in exposed sites due to taller stems
