Cowslip Primula veris

A beloved native wildflower with fragrant, nodding yellow blooms borne on upright stems above rosettes of crinkled green leaves. Cowslip is a hardy perennial ideal for meadows, lawns, verges and wildlife gardens, flowering from April to May. It supports bees, butterflies and the caterpillars of the Duke of Burgundy Fritillary, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly planting. Thrives in sun or partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including damp and heavy types. Once established, it self-seeds gently and returns reliably each spring.

Sowing instructions

 

Sow indoors in trays on the surface of moist compost—do not cover. Keep in a cool, bright place and maintain moisture. For outdoor sowing, scatter thinly in prepared soil and rake in lightly. Germination may be slow and uneven; cold exposure can help. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 20–30 cm apart.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in sun or partial shade in moist or heavy soil. Water during dry spells and allow plants to self-seed naturally. Cut back spent flower stems to encourage basal growth. Hardy and low-maintenance once established.
