A hardy annual wildflower producing striking deep blue blooms in rounded clusters. Known botanically as Centaurea cyanus Blue Ball this variety is valued for its intense colour and traditional charm.

 

Unlike ordinary bedding plants Cornflower Blue Ball retains its natural character with upright stems and vivid flowers making it one of the most admired wildflowers for cottage gardens and meadows.

Sow March to May directly outdoors in prepared beds. Germination 7 to 14 days at 15 to 20°C. Soil and Position Light well drained soil; prefers full sun. Height 60 to 80 cm with upright stems and rounded blue flowers. Flowering June to September.

 

Sowing instructions

Prepare a fine seed bed in full sun. Sow seeds thinly in drills 1 cm deep and 25 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 15 cm spacing once established. Water well after sowing and keep soil evenly moist during dry spells. Cornflower Blue Ball is best grown in naturalistic plantings or cutting gardens.

 

Grow and maintenance

Grow in light soil with regular watering during dry periods. Cornflower Blue Ball thrives in sunny sites and is hardy in summer conditions. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering or allow plants to self seed for naturalised displays.
