Cornflower Black Ball Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A dramatic heirloom with deep maroon double blooms, ideal for borders, cutting, and edible garnishes.

Cornflower Black Ball is a hardy annual known for its rich, milk chocolate to near black flowers that add depth and contrast to summer displays. With long, slender stems and finely cut foliage, it’s perfect for cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and bouquets.

The blooms are edible and attract bees and butterflies, making it both ornamental and ecological. Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, this variety thrives in full sun and poor to moderately fertile soil.

Seed Qty: Approx. 250

Sow: March – May or September (direct)
Germination: 7 – 14 days at 15–20°C
Soil: Well-drained; loam, chalk, or sandy; neutral to alkaline

Sow seeds directly outdoors from March to May or in early autumn for overwintering. Prepare a weed-free bed with fine tilth and sow into shallow drills 20 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 20 cm spacing once established. For early blooms, sow indoors in modules and transplant after the last frost.

Water moderately and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Suitable for containers and edible flower use.
