Leek Musselburgh Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
 
This extremely hardy and reliable winter vegetable has dark green tops with a thick white tender stem that has  a mild flavour.
 
They can be pulled throughout the winter months when little else is growing.

Do not plant with beans and peas

Leeks are a hungry crop that need well drained soil choose a sunny spot and dig the site in winter adding plenty of compost or well rotted manure about a week before transplanting apply a general purpose fertiliser.
 
Sow between January - February indoors in seed trays sowing the seed thinly 1.5cm deep and covering with a layer of compost when the leeks have grown to around 15cm cut back the foliage to 100cm. Harden off the young plants and plant out at the end of April.
 
Sow the seed in a seed bed from March - April in drills 1.5cm deep thin to 4cm apart when the seedlings emerge.
 
The young plants are ready for transplanting when they are around 20cm high, water the bed the day before, trim the roots and the leaf tips.  
Make a hole 15cm deep with a dibber place the trimmed leek in the hole water the hole do not fill the hole with soil. Plant the young leeks 15cm apart and 30cm between rows.
 
As the leeks grow gently draw soil up around the plants to increase the length of the stem.
 
Water well in dry weather.
