Corn Salad Verte De Cambrai Seed

Verte de Cambrai is a classic French variety of corn salad, also called lambs lettuce or mâche.

 

It forms compact rosettes of small dark green leaves with a delicate nutty flavour and tender texture. This variety is particularly valued for its ability to thrive in cool conditions, making it one of the best salad crops for autumn and winter harvests.

 

Plants are low growing and hardy, often continuing to produce through frosts with minimal protection. Leaves can be harvested individually or as whole rosettes once they reach 6 to 8 leaves. With its mild flavour and soft buttery texture, Verte de Cambrai is a versatile addition to mixed salads and pairs beautifully with stronger greens.

Germination 7 to 14 days in cool moist soil

Soil and Position Fertile, moisture retentive soil in sun or partial shade

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly in shallow drills 0.5 cm deep, spacing rows 25–30 cm apart. Alternatively, broadcast seed over a prepared bed. Thin seedlings to 10 cm apart. For winter harvests, cover with cloches or fleece in severe weather.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Corn salad is generally trouble free and thrives in cool moist conditions. Water during dry spells to prevent bolting. Protect from slugs and snails. Harvest regularly to encourage new growth.
