Sow seeds indoors from February or directly outdoors from April to July. Use trays or pots filled with fine compost, sowing seeds 1 cm deep. Keep moist and warm at 15–20°C for germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots or final positions, spacing 45–60 cm apart. Choose a sunny site with fertile, moisture-retentive soil and firm the ground before planting. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and protect developing heads from sun damage by folding outer leaves over the curds. Harvest when heads are firm, white, and fully formed.
