Cardoon Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

This large architectural plant is quite at home in the flower border or vegetable patch.

It is grown for it's large grey green leaves that have thick fleshy stems with a nutty flavour and can be harvested from mid summer until early autumn.

The extremely attractive purple blue thistle like flowers are attractive to Bees and other pollinated insects and can be left on the plant to over winter to feed birds and wildlife.

They also make a nice cut flower.

Sow January - March
Germination 7 - 21 days
All soil types that are acidic, alkaline or neutral
Harvest July - September
A good source of vitamin C and K
Boil or steam the fleshy stems or use raw in salads

Cardoons need a well drained soil so if the soil is heavy add some horticultural grit to the planting hole.

Sow thinly between January - March indoors on to moist compost.
When the plants are large enough to handle transfer to small pots to grow on.

Harden off the plants and gradually accustom them to the outside then plant out where they are to grow when the risk of frost has passed.
