Cape Marigold Yellow Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Cape marigolds are cheerful, sun loving annuals that bring a burst of golden colour to dry, open spaces. This yellow-flowered strain produces silky, daisy like blooms in bright lemon and sunshine tones, each with a warm golden centre. The flowers open fully in sunlight and close in shade or at night, creating a garden that shifts with the light.

Native to South Africa, Cape marigolds thrive in poor, sandy soils and require minimal care once established.

Their silvery-green foliage forms a soft, drought-tolerant base that complements the vivid blooms. ‘Yellow’ is ideal for mass planting, wildflower borders, and gravel gardens, where its luminous colour draws pollinators and brightens even the driest corners.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained compost. Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite. For indoor sowing, use trays or pots and maintain warmth at 15–20°C. Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks. Harden off and transplant after last frost, spacing 20–30 cm apart. For direct sowing, rake soil to a fine tilth and water gently after sowing.

Grow and Maintenance

Water seedlings regularly until established, then reduce watering. Cape marigolds prefer dry conditions and full sun. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. In mild climates, they may self-seed and return the following year. Avoid overfeeding, as rich soils can reduce flowering.
