Cape Marigold Orange Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Cape marigolds, also known as African daisies, are vibrant, sun-loving annuals that thrive in dry, open conditions.

This orange-flowered strain produces dazzling blooms in rich tangerine and sunset tones, each with a golden centre and silky petals that open wide in full sun. The flowers close in shade or at night, adding movement and rhythm to borders and wildflower plantings.

Native to South Africa, Cape marigolds are ideal for low-maintenance gardens, gravel beds, and coastal schemes. Their silvery-green foliage is drought-tolerant and compact, forming a soft cushion beneath the vivid blooms. ‘Orange’ is especially effective when sown en masse or paired with cool-toned companions for contrast.

Loved by pollinators and easy to grow, it’s a reliable performer from late spring through summer.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained compost. Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite. For indoor sowing, use trays or pots and maintain warmth at 15–20°C. Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks. Harden off and transplant after last frost, spacing 20–30 cm apart. For direct sowing, rake soil to a fine tilth and water gently after sowing.

Grow and Maintenance

Water seedlings regularly until established, then reduce watering. Cape marigolds prefer dry conditions and full sun. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. In mild climates, they may self-seed and return the following year. Avoid overfeeding, as rich soils can reduce flowering.
