Cabbage Filderkraut Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Cabbage Filderkraut (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a traditional German heirloom prized for its large, pointed heads and exceptional flavour.

Renowned for its high dry matter content and sweet, tender leaves, Filderkraut is the gold standard for homemade sauerkraut perfect for raised beds, allotments, and autumn harvests.

Thriving in fertile, moisture retentive soil, Filderkraut flourishes in full sun and produces tall, conical heads with minimal core and excellent storage potential. Its robust growth and rich flavour also make it ideal for steaming, braising, and fresh slaws.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors or Outdoors:
Sow seeds 1 cm deep in trays or directly into prepared beds. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 45 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. Water regularly and mulch to retain moisture.

Growing On:
Protect young plants from cabbage root fly and caterpillars. Harvest when heads are firm, well-formed, and fully pointed. Cut at the base and remove outer leaves for clean storage or fermentation.

Cabbage Filderkraut delivers heirloom quality, sweet flavour, and generous yields in a classic autumn crop. A must have for kraut-making and cool season cooking.
