A high quality F1 hybrid broccoli producing large dense heads with excellent flavour and reliability. Known botanically as Brassica oleracea var. italica Marathon F1 this variety is widely grown for its uniform crops and strong resistance to bolting. The compact plants produce firm domed heads followed by a succession of tasty side shoots for extended harvesting.

 

Unlike older open pollinated types Marathon F1 offers improved vigour and consistency making it a dependable choice for both home gardeners and market growers. Its excellent holding ability in the ground allows for flexible harvesting over a long period.

 

Seed Qty Approx 75 seeds

 

Sow March to June indoors or directly outdoors in seed beds. Germination 7 to 14 days at 15–20°C. Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil; prefers full sun and a sheltered position. Height Approx 45 to 60 cm; compact upright habit. Harvesting July to October; cut central head first then harvest side shoots as they develop.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow seeds indoors from March to June in trays or modules of moist compost. Cover lightly and keep at 15 to 20°C until germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into pots or seed beds. Harden off and plant out into final positions spacing 45 cm apart once plants are sturdy and frost risk has passed.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile moisture retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly especially during dry spells and feed with a high nitrogen fertiliser to encourage leafy growth. Protect young plants from cabbage root fly and pigeons. Cut the central head promptly when firm to encourage side shoot production.
