Broad Bean Witkiem ORGANIC Seed – Irish Plants Direct

 

A reliable and early cropping organic broad bean producing strong plants with large pods filled with plump green beans. Known botanically as Vicia faba Witkiem this variety is valued for its excellent flavour and dependable yields. The beans are tender and sweet when picked young and develop a rich earthy taste when fully mature.

 

Unlike later varieties Witkiem is quick to establish and can be sown early in the season for one of the first harvests of the year. Its sturdy plants withstand cooler conditions and provide a generous crop for home gardens and allotments.

 

Seed Qty Approx 15 grams

 

Sow February to April directly outdoors or under cloches. Germination 10 to 21 days at 8–15°C. Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil; prefers full sun and a sheltered position. Height Approx 90 cm; upright bushy habit. Harvesting May to July; pick pods regularly while young and tender.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow seeds 5 cm deep in double rows 20 cm apart with 60 cm between each pair of rows. Water well after sowing. For early crops sow under cloches in February or directly outdoors from March. Successional sowings will extend the harvest period. Support taller plants if exposed to strong winds.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile moisture retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly especially during flowering and pod formation. Pinch out the growing tips once the first pods have set to encourage pod development and deter blackfly. Harvest pods frequently to maintain cropping.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Perfect for steaming boiling or adding to soups and stews. Young beans are sweet and tender while mature beans have a rich earthy flavour. Suitable for freezing to enjoy year round. As an organic variety it supports sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening practices. Flowers attract pollinators and the plants improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen.
