Turnip Purple Top Milan ORGANIC Seed - Irish Plants Direct

This fast growing variety has white and purple flat roots with a good texture and nutty flavour.

It can be harvested small and used as baby vegetable or left to mature providing large roots.

The roots do not go woody with age and the tops can be used as tasty greens.

Sow January - July

Germination 7 - 14 days

Loam or clay soil that's alkaline or neutral

Harvest June - November

Companion Plants Peas, Brassica's, Tomatoes and squash

Do not plant with Potatoes, radish or any other root vegetable.

Harvest between 10 cm in diameter.

Turnip tops can be harvested as greens if they are picked when they are young.

A good source of vitamin C

Use roasted, mashed or boiled.

Turnips are brassicas that will grow a sunny area that has well drained fertile soil that was well dug in autumn that is not acidic liming may be necessary.

Sow seed 1cm deep under cloches, fleece or in a cold frame or on a window sill in pots or modules between January - April sowing 2-3 seeds per pot.

Remove the weaker seedlings leaving one in the pot to grow on.

Plant out in the garden after the risk of frost has passed.

Planting 30 - 40cm between plants and 40cm between rows.

The seed can be sown in open ground between April - July gradually thinning the seedlings to reach a final distance of between 30 - 40cm apart and 40cm between rows.
