  • Description

Borage is a classic cottage garden herb celebrated for its vivid blue star shaped flowers and fresh cucumber scented leaves.

It brings a lively splash of colour to beds and borders while offering a long season of edible blooms that brighten salads, drinks and summer dishes.

This traditional variety is known for its generous flowering habit and its ability to attract bees and other pollinators throughout the warm months. The plants grow with a natural relaxed charm, creating a soft airy presence that suits both herb gardens and ornamental plantings.

The foliage is soft and textured with a refreshing flavour that makes it a favourite for garnishes and herbal teas. The flowers are produced continuously from early summer and can be harvested regularly for culinary use. Borage self seeds lightly in the right conditions, returning each year to create a naturalised effect.

Thriving in full sun and well drained soil, borage is easy to grow and well suited to beds, borders, vegetable plots and wildlife friendly gardens. It is a reliable choice for gardeners who want colour, flavour and pollinator appeal in one simple plant.

Sow seeds directly outdoors where they are to grow in moist free draining soil. Cover lightly with a fine layer of soil and keep the area evenly moist until seedlings appear. Thin young plants to allow space for strong growth. For earlier flowers, seeds may be started indoors and transplanted once the risk of frost has passed.

Grow and Maintenance
Water during dry spells and remove spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. Plants may lean as they mature and can be supported if needed. Allow a few flowers to set seed if you wish the plants to return naturally the following year. Borage is a generous pollinator plant and thrives in sunny open positions.
