Bean Yard Long Purple Seeds

A traditional and eye catching yard long bean producing slender deep purple pods that can reach up to 45 to 60 cm in length. Known botanically as Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis Yard Long Purple this vigorous climber is highly productive and ornamental. The pods are tender and stringless when young with a mild flavour that is excellent for stir fries steaming and Asian inspired dishes.

 

Unlike bush beans Yard Long Purple requires support but rewards the gardener with abundant crops over a long season. Its climbing habit and striking purple pods make it both a decorative and practical addition to the vegetable garden.

 

Seed Qty Approx 6 grams 

 

Sow April to June indoors or directly outdoors after frost. Germination 7 to 14 days at 20–25°C. Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil; prefers full sun and a sheltered position. Height Vines up to 2 to 3 m; climbing habit requires support. Harvesting July to September; pick pods regularly while young and tender.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow indoors from April in pots or modules placing seeds 3 cm deep. Keep warm at 20 to 25°C. Harden off and plant out after frost providing canes or trellis for support. Alternatively sow directly outdoors from late May once the soil has warmed. Space plants 30 cm apart in rows 75 cm apart.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile moisture retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Provide strong supports such as canes or netting for the climbing vines. Water regularly especially during dry spells and feed with a high potash fertiliser once pods begin to form. Harvest pods frequently while young and tender to encourage continuous production. Protect seedlings from slugs and birds.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Perfect for stir fries steaming and Asian style dishes where the long tender pods are highly prized. The purple pods retain colour when lightly cooked and add visual appeal to the plate. Highly productive vines make efficient use of vertical space in small gardens. Flowers attract pollinators and regular harvesting ensures a long cropping season.
