Beetroot Chioggia Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Beta vulgaris ‘Chioggia’ is a striking Italian heirloom variety producing round roots with distinctive concentric pink and white rings.

The roots are tender, sweet, and mild in flavour, making them excellent for eating raw in salads, as well as for roasting, boiling, and pickling. When sliced, the candy-striped pattern adds novelty and visual appeal to dishes.

A reliable cropper, Chioggia combines heritage charm with culinary versatility.

Perfect for sunny beds, borders, and vegetable plots. Plants are vigorous and compact, yielding uniform roots steadily through summer and autumn.

Excellent for gardeners seeking a unique beetroot variety with both ornamental and culinary qualities.

Sowing instructions
Sow seeds thinly in drills 2 cm deep, spacing rows 30 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 10 cm apart once established. Keep soil moist to encourage tender growth. Successional sowings every few weeks will extend the harvest period. Roots are best harvested young for sweetness and tenderness.

Grow and maintenance
Plant in full sun in fertile, free draining soil. Water regularly during dry spells to support root development. Weed carefully to avoid disturbing shallow roots. Harvest roots when medium-sized for best flavour. Leaves can also be eaten young as salad greens. Store harvested roots in a cool, dry place.

Uses and benefits
Perfect for salads, roasting, boiling, and pickling. Chioggia beetroot is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, offering both nutritional and culinary value. Its distinctive candy-striped flesh makes it a favourite for chefs and home gardeners alike.
