An Italian heirloom variety producing slender, elongated fruits with glossy deep purple skin and a sweet, nutty flavour.

 

The plants are upright and vigorous, with purple-tinged stems and lilac flowers that give way to a generous harvest of elegant aubergines.

 

 

Ideal for greenhouse growing, polytunnels, or sheltered outdoor beds. This variety is a reliable cropper and well-suited to Mediterranean-style dishes. Fruits are best harvested when firm and shiny, typically 20–25 cm long.

Sow March to April indoors in trays or modules.

Germination 8 to 14 days at 20–25°C.

Soil and Position Loam or sandy soil; prefers acidic to neutral pH. Full sun and sheltered position.

Harvesting August to October; pick when fruits are firm and glossy.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow between March and April into moist seed compost, 0.5–1 cm deep. Maintain warmth (20–25°C) and consistent moisture. Transplant seedlings when they have 2–3 true leaves into individual pots. Harden off and plant out after all risk of frost has passed, spacing 40–50 cm apart.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly and feed monthly with a high-potash fertiliser once flowering begins. Support plants with stakes or cages. Harvest fruits before skin dulls to maintain best flavour and texture.

Perfect for greenhouse beds, large containers, or sheltered outdoor plots. The slender fruits are ideal for grilling, roasting, or slicing into pasta dishes, curries, and salads. Companion plant with beans, peas, peppers, marigolds, and nasturtiums. Avoid planting near potatoes or kohlrabi.
