Aquilegia Dwarf Mix Seed

Aquilegia vulgaris

A compact and free-flowering perennial with delicate bonnet-shaped blooms in a soft mix of pink, blue, white, and violet. Dwarf Columbine Mix forms tidy clumps of ferny foliage topped with elegant nodding flowers from late spring to early summer. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and hoverflies and bring a romantic touch to borders, rockeries, and cottage-style planting schemes.

This easy to grow perennial thrives in sun or partial shade and well drained soil and is ideal for edging, informal beds, and wildlife-friendly gardens. It naturalises gently and pairs beautifully with spring bulbs and low-growing perennials.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist well drained compost and lightly cover with fine soil or vermiculite. Maintain cool temperatures at 15 to 20°C in a propagator or covered tray. Germination may take 3 to 4 weeks. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle. Harden off and plant out after last frost spacing 25 to 35 cm apart. For direct sowing wait until soil is warm and frost risk has passed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells and feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Remove spent flower heads to encourage tidy growth and prevent excessive self-seeding. Columbine prefers cool conditions and partial shade and will slowly naturalise in suitable settings. Suitable for borders rockeries and wildlife schemes.
