Amaranthus Pygmy Torch RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Amaranthus caudatus 'Pygmy Torch' is a stunning annual with compact, bushy growth and eye-catching deep crimson flower spikes.

This variety offers a bold and dramatic addition to any garden, perfect for borders, beds, or container planting.

The name Amaranthus comes from the Greek word amarantos, meaning "unfading," a reference to its long-lasting blooms, while caudatus means "tailed," describing the flower's characteristic tassel-like appearance. 'Pygmy Torch' grows to a modest height, making it a versatile choice for small gardens or mixed displays.

Thriving in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and full sun, Amaranthus Pygmy Torch reaches a height of 40 - 50 cm. Its vibrant flower spikes are not only decorative but also attractive to pollinators, adding ecological value to your garden.

This variety has been recognised with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its outstanding performance and reliability, and it is part of the Royal Horticultural Society seed scheme, ensuring the highest quality seeds for successful growing.

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to April. Lightly cover with a fine layer of compost and maintain a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for optimal growth.

With its striking colour, compact size, and RHS AGM recognition, Amaranthus Pygmy Torch is a fantastic choice for gardeners looking to add drama and elegance to their outdoor spaces.
