Alchemilla Mollis RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Alchemilla mollis, commonly known as Lady’s Mantle, is a charming and versatile perennial cherished for its soft, scalloped leaves and delicate sprays of lime-green flowers. The name Alchemilla comes from the Arabic word “alkemelych,” meaning “alchemy,” as dew collected on its leaves was once believed to have magical properties. Mollis translates to "soft," referencing the plant's velvety foliage. This elegant plant adds a touch of grace to borders, cottage gardens, and shaded areas, where its light-catching foliage and flowers bring subtle brightness.

This reliable perennial thrives in moist, well-drained soil and grows happily in sun or partial shade. It reaches a height of 45 - 60 cm, making it ideal for softening edges or acting as ground cover.

Alchemilla mollis is particularly valued for its long-lasting blooms and ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Recognised with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), this variety has proven performance in UK gardens and is part of the Royal Horticultural Society seed scheme, offering gardeners a dependable and high-quality seed choice.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from January to March. Press seeds lightly onto the surface but do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep at a cool temperature of 15-18°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots once they are large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from March to May. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and press gently for good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the area moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing once established.

Perfect for naturalising or filling gaps in the garden, Alchemilla mollis combines beauty with functionality. Its inclusion in the RHS seed scheme and its AGM recognition make it a reliable choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance yet stunning addition to their outdoor space.
