Achillea Gold Plate RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Achillea filipendulina 'Gold Plate' is a bold, award-winning perennial admired for its vivid golden-yellow flower clusters and finely cut, fern-like foliage.

The name Achillea honours the Greek hero Achilles, who was said to use this plant for its medicinal properties. Filipendulina refers to the plant's thread-like, hanging rootlets. 'Gold Plate' is particularly esteemed for its tall stature, drought tolerance, and long-lasting blooms, making it a favourite for pollinator-friendly gardens and dried floral arrangements.

Recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), this variety holds the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), signifying its outstanding performance in UK gardens. It is also included in the RHS seed scheme, providing gardeners with a reliable and high-quality seed selection.

This hardy perennial thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil under full sun. Growing to an impressive height of 120 - 150 cm, Achillea Gold Plate is ideal for adding height and structure to mixed borders, cottage gardens, and prairie-style plantings. Its brightly coloured blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the summer.

Low-maintenance and versatile, Achillea Gold Plate is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering. Deadhead spent blooms to extend the flowering season, and cut back the plant in late autumn for tidy regrowth in spring. Its sturdy stems and long-lasting flowers make it an exceptional choice for cutting gardens.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to May. Lightly press seeds into the surface without covering, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to June. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press down for good seed-to-soil contact. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for optimal growth.

A fantastic addition to any garden, Achillea Gold Plate combines vibrant colour with low-maintenance care. With its inclusion in the RHS seed scheme and its AGM status, this variety is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners seeking reliable, high-quality plants.
