Wormwood Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A striking and aromatic perennial, Atemisia absinthium is valued for its finely cut silver grey foliage and its long history in herbal and ornamental gardening.

Its soft, feathery leaves create a luminous contrast in borders, gravel gardens, and drought tolerant schemes, adding texture and movement throughout the season.

This resilient perennial thrives in poor, dry soils and full sun, making it an excellent choice for low maintenance planting.

Once established, Wormwood forms a neat, upright clump that withstands heat, wind, and coastal exposure with ease.

Its aromatic foliage is naturally unappealing to many pests, offering a useful companion plant for vegetable and herb gardens.

Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist, free draining compost and press gently to ensure good contact. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain temperatures between 15 and 20°C and keep the compost just lightly moist. Germination usually occurs within 2 to 4 weeks. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 45 to 60 cm apart. Harden off indoor raised plants before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Grow and Maintenance
Wormwood thrives in lean, well drained soils and requires very little feeding. Water sparingly, as excessive moisture can reduce vigour. Cut back old stems in early spring to encourage fresh growth. In richer soils, trim lightly through the season to maintain a compact shape. Once established, Atemisia absinthium is exceptionally hardy and drought tolerant.
