Description

Valerian Officinalis Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

This tall herbaceous perennial has green fleshy branching stems with pinky white clusters of flowers.

Grow in mixed borders and cottage garden schemes.

It has been used for the extraction of it's juices from it's roots to aid sleep and nervous disorders.

Harvest the roots in autumn of the second year wash dry and store in an airtight container to use later.

Sow March - May

Loam, chalk or sandy soil that's acidic, alkaline or neutral

Germination time 14 - 21days.

Height 100cm

Plant in sun or partial shade.

Flowers July - September

Ideal for beds, borders, wildlife, cottage, wildflower

Deadhead to prolong flowering

Sow between March - May on a warm window sill or propagator into trays of moist compost cover with 5mm of sieved compost.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant to 5cm apart into trays to grow on.

Gradually harden off the plants before planting out into their flowering position after all risk of frost has passed.
