Tomato Roma Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

The Solanum lycopersicum commonly known as the Tomato is one of the most popular fruits grown in gardens worldwide, especially for its culinary uses.

The Latin name Solanum lycopersicum comes from Solanum (meaning "nightshade") and lycopersicum (meaning "wolf peach"), referencing the plant's historical medicinal uses.

Roma tomatoes, often referred to as plum tomatoes, are highly prized for their dense, meaty flesh, making them perfect for sauces, pastes, and canning. This variety produces a reliable, high-yield crop of oval-shaped tomatoes with a rich, tangy flavour.

This determinate variety grows to a height of 45-60 cm and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with full sun. Roma tomatoes are known for their ability to produce heavy crops of fruit in a short growing season, making them an excellent choice for gardeners looking to harvest tomatoes for preserving or cooking.

They are perfect for growing in garden beds, raised beds, or large containers.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from January to April. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and keep at a temperature of 18-21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots or directly into the garden after the last frost, spacing plants 45-60 cm apart.

Outdoors: If sowing directly outdoors, wait until after the last frost and ensure the soil has warmed up. Space plants 45-60 cm apart and provide support with stakes or cages to keep the plants upright as they grow.

Tomato Roma is ideal for gardeners looking to grow a high-yielding, reliable variety that produces meaty tomatoes perfect for sauces and preserving. Its compact growth and excellent flavour make it a must-have for any garden.
