Sweet Sultan Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

The Centaurea moschata commonly known as Sweet Sultan is a charming annual known for its unique, fragrant flowers and feathery, thistle-like appearance.

The Latin name Centaurea moschata is derived from centaurea, meaning "plant of the centaur," referencing ancient beliefs in its medicinal properties, and moschata, meaning "musk," due to its musky fragrance.

Sweet Sultan is a delightful plant that produces fluffy, daisy-like blooms in shades of purple, pink, and white, adding a soft, elegant touch to flower beds, borders, and wildflower gardens.

This compact, bushy plant grows to a height of 60-75 cm and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with full sun or partial shade. Sweet Sultan is perfect for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies, and its long-lasting blooms, from early summer to autumn, make it a wonderful addition to any garden looking for vibrant colour and texture.

The plant’s musky-scented flowers also make it a favourite for drying and using in floral arrangements.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Lightly press the seeds into the surface but do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep at a temperature of 18-20°C. Once seedlings are large enough, harden them off and transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing them 30-40 cm apart.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil from April to May. Scatter seeds thinly and lightly press them into the soil. Keep moist until germination occurs and thin seedlings to 30-40 cm apart for healthy growth.

Sweet Sultan is a great choice for gardeners looking to add unique texture, fragrance, and colour to their garden. Its charming blooms and ability to attract pollinators make it a standout feature in any flower display.
