Description
Safflower Zanzibar Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
Safflower Zanzibar is a striking and vibrant annual, known for its bold red-orange flowers and spiny petals.
This exotic variety is an excellent addition to any garden, providing colourful blooms and brightening up borders, wildflower meadows, and pollinator-friendly spaces.
Not only does Safflower Zanzibar attract bees and butterflies, but its seeds are also highly valued in bird feed and can be used to make oil.
Its strong and drought tolerant nature makes it an ideal choice for areas with limited water resources, offering both beauty and practicality.
Seed Qty: Approx. 1 gram
Sow: April – May
Germination: 10 – 14 days
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH
Height: 80 – 90 cm
Flowering: June – September
Companion Plants: Sunflowers, Marigolds, Cosmos
Avoid Planting With: Root vegetables
Sowing Instructions:
Sow seeds directly outdoors from April to May in well prepared soil. Lightly scatter seeds and cover them with a thin layer of soil, then water gently. If starting indoors, sow 4–6 weeks before the last frost date and transplant after frost danger has passed.
Plant 30 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, Safflower Zanzibar is drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low maintenance gardens. Deadhead regularly to encourage further flowering and prevent self-seeding.
With its vibrant red-orange flowers and resilience to dry conditions, Safflower Zanzibar brings exotic beauty to your garden while attracting beneficial insects. Its dual purpose for beauty and bird feeding makes it a wonderful and versatile addition to any garden.
