Red Wild Poppy Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Papaver dubium Red Poppy is a graceful annual wildflower known for its soft, silky petals and elegant, slender growth. This species produces delicate blooms in rich, glowing shades of red that bring a natural, meadow like charm to borders, wildlife gardens, and informal planting schemes.

The flowers sit atop tall, fine stems that sway gently in the breeze, creating a light, airy movement throughout the garden.

Highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects, Papaver dubium supports pollinators while adding effortless colour and texture. Once established, it self seeds lightly, returning in future seasons with a natural, scattered beauty.

Thriving in full sun and poor, well-drained soils, this poppy is ideal for wildflower mixes, cottage gardens, and low maintenance spaces.

Its understated elegance and soft, papery blooms make it a perfect choice for gardeners seeking a more refined alternative to the classic field poppy.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow thinly on the surface of moist seed compost from March to April. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of 15–18°C and keep the compost evenly moist. Transplant seedlings carefully into small pots once large enough to handle, then harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Direct sow from March to May or late August to October. Scatter seeds thinly over raked soil, press gently into the surface, and water lightly. Avoid covering the seed. Thin seedlings as required to allow strong, upright growth and natural spacing.

Papaver dubium Red Poppy is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a soft, naturalistic wildflower that supports pollinators and brings gentle movement and colour to borders, meadows, and wildlife-friendly spaces.
