Sowing Instructions

Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow individually into pots of moist, free draining compost and cover lightly with fine soil. Maintain temperatures between 18 and 22°C and keep the compost just slightly moist. Germination can be slow and irregular, often taking several weeks. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on in bright, warm conditions. Move outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

Olives prefer lean, well drained soils and full sun. Water sparingly, allowing the compost to dry slightly between waterings. Feed lightly during the growing season to support steady growth. Prune in late spring to shape and encourage branching. In cooler climates, provide winter protection or move container grown plants to a sheltered, frost free position. Once established, Olea europaea is remarkably drought tolerant and long lived.
