Description
Nigella Moody Blues Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
The Nigella damascena Moody Blues is a charming cottage garden favourite, offering airy, delicate blooms in shades of blue, lavender, and white.
Commonly known as Love-in-a-Mist, this variety is named for its fine, fern-like foliage, which forms a misty halo around its intricate flowers.
A low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly annual, Moody Blues grows to a height of 45–60 cm, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun. Ideal for borders, wildflower meadows, and cut flower arrangements, this self-seeding plant will return year after year, creating a natural, effortless display.
Its ornamental seed pods add interest to dried flower arrangements.
Seed Qty: Approx. 200
Sow: April – May (outdoors) or August – September (for early blooms)
Germination: 14 – 21 days
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil; prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH
Height: 45 – 60 cm
Flowering: June – September
Companion Plants: Cornflowers, Cosmos, Poppies
Avoid Planting With: Aggressive groundcovers that may smother seedlings
For continuous flowering, allow some seed heads to mature and self-sow naturally. Deadhead spent flowers if reseeding is not desired.
Sowing Instructions
Outdoors:
Sow directly into finely raked soil from March to May or August to September. Lightly cover with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Once seedlings are established, thin to 20 cm apart for healthy growth.
With whimsical, misty blooms and captivating seed heads, Nigella Moody Blues is a must-have for informal, wildlife-friendly gardens—bringing grace and charm to any planting scheme.
