Nicotiana Langsdorffii RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Nicotiana langsdorffii commonly known as Langsdorff’s Tobacco,is an elegant and aromatic biennial or short-lived perennial with tall spikes of tubular, pale green to white flowers.

Its upright growth habit and subtle fragrance make it a striking addition to any garden, especially in cottage gardens, borders, and as part of mixed plantings. Known for its unique flower colour and shape, Nicotiana langsdorffii is an excellent choice for adding height and interest to your summer garden.

The genus Nicotiana is named after Jean Nicot, the French ambassador to Portugal who introduced tobacco to Europe. Langsdorffii honours the German botanist Carl Langsdorff, who first collected the plant in Brazil. This particular variety is highly regarded for its upright form and the contrast of its delicate flowers against dark green foliage, providing a unique visual appeal in the garden.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Nicotiana langsdorffii is recognised for its outstanding performance and reliability in UK gardens. It thrives in sunny spots, producing long-lasting blooms that attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and moths. Its pleasing fragrance also makes it a great choice for evening gardens.

This variety grows to an impressive height of 90 - 120 cm and is perfect for planting at the back of borders or in large containers, where it can stand tall and showcase its distinctive flowers.

Once established, Nicotiana langsdorffii is relatively low-maintenance. Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, and deadheading spent flowers will help extend the blooming period. This variety is also tolerant of poor soil conditions, though it thrives best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Lightly press the seeds into the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil from April to May. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to a spacing of 30 - 40 cm for healthy growth.

With its unique flower form and graceful height, Nicotiana langsdorffii is a superb choice for gardeners looking to add something distinctive and fragrant to their garden. Its long-lasting blooms and attraction to pollinators make it a valuable addition to any garden design.
