Mustard Colour And Bite Seeds

A quick and easy to grow spicy mustard leaf mix producing striking foliage in deep purples and bright greens with a lively peppery bite, ideal for baby leaf salads, sandwiches and stir fries where visual impact and flavour are wanted.

 

Sow little and often for a continuous supply of tender baby leaves or leave to mature for hotter, full sized leaves.

Sow and germination

Sow March to August outdoors in succession for a steady harvest; sow thinly in pots or seedbeds and make fortnightly sowings for continuous supply. Germination 7 to 14 days at typical cool to moderate seedbed temperatures.

Soil and position

Loam or sandy soil that is alkaline to neutral; prefers fertile well drained ground and performs well in pots or containers where spread can be controlled.

Size and harvest

Leaves may be picked young as baby leaves for milder flavour or left to mature for a stronger spicy taste; harvest from April through October depending on sowing date and climate.

Companion planting and avoidances

Good Companions Beetroot; beans; carrots; radish. Do not plant with cabbage or other brassicas to reduce pest and disease build up.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow thinly outdoors from March onwards under cloches if needed and continue successional sowings every two weeks through to August for continuous supply. Space seedlings as required when growing on and harvest leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Keep soil consistently moist and fertile; pick leaves regularly to prevent premature flowering and to maintain tender growth. Use containers to restrict rampant spreading and rotate crops each year to reduce soil borne problems.

 

Excellent raw in salads and sandwiches or lightly wilted in stir fries; a good source of vitamin A and a handy way to add both colour and spice to kitchen garden harvests.
