Morning Glory Choice Mix Seed

A fast growing half hardy annual climber producing large trumpet shaped blooms in a bright mix of colours that open in the morning and provide a spectacular summer display on trellis, arches, fences and in tall containers.

 

Self supporting habit makes this mix ideal for training up wigwams or frames and for creating instant vertical colour.

Sow March to May indoors on a warm windowsill or in a propagator for earlier plants; direct sow outdoors April to May after risk of frost.

Germination 5 to 14 days at 18 to 22°C; scarifying or nicking the hard seed coat speeds uptake and encourages quicker, more reliable germination.

Soil Loam clay or sandy soil; acidic alkaline or neutral; prefers a sunny position with free draining soil.

Height Up to 300 cm typical when trained; spread 40 cm or more depending on support and pruning.

Flowering June to September with peak display in midsummer; deadhead to prolong flowering and reduce excessive self seed.

Good Companions Sweet peas; nasturtiums; clematis; climbing roses.

Avoid Pairing With Deep Shade Loving Plants that will be outcompeted for light.

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Soak or nick seeds overnight to soften the coat then sow individually in modular compost March to May; keep at around 18 to 22°C and transplant when large enough to handle. Harden off seedlings before planting out and provide strong support for twining growth. For direct sowing delay until soil is warm and all risk of frost has passed.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Grow in full sun and water regularly during establishment; avoid waterlogged conditions. Train young shoots onto supports and pinch out growing tips to encourage bushier side shoots where a denser display is wanted. Mulch to conserve moisture in containers and beds. Collect mature seed heads if you wish to save seed or prevent unwanted self sowing.
