Mizuna Green Seeds

Mizuna Green is a traditional Japanese salad leaf increasingly popular in European and UK gardens.

 

It forms attractive rosettes of finely serrated dark green leaves with slender white stalks. The flavour is mildly peppery with a hint of mustard, less pungent than rocket, making it versatile in both raw and cooked dishes.

 

This variety is valued for its speed and resilience. Mizuna can be sown almost year round, producing baby leaves in as little as 3 weeks and mature plants in 6–8 weeks. It is tolerant of cooler weather and low light, making it an excellent choice for autumn and winter salads under cover. Plants will also regrow after cutting, providing multiple harvests from a single sowing.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly in shallow drills 0.5 cm deep, spacing rows 20–25 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 10–15 cm apart for cut and come again harvests, or wider for full heads. For continuous supply, sow every 3–4 weeks.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Keep soil evenly moist to prevent bolting. Mizuna is hardy and can withstand light frosts, but protection with fleece or cloches extends the season. Remove flower stems promptly to prolong leaf production. Slugs and flea beetles may occasionally be an issue, especially in spring.
