Mint Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A bushy perennial herb with aromatic bright green leaves that are excellent fresh or dried for culinary uses, teas and cocktails.

Ideal for pots, window boxes or a dedicated herb bed where you want a long supply of fragrant leaves; best grown in containers to control vigorous spreading and protect other plants from being overtaken.

Seed Qty Approx 1250

Sow March to June; sow thinly indoors for best results and transplant after risk of frost.
Germination and Conditions
Germination 14 to 21 days at 15 to 20°C; sow 0.5 cm deep and keep the compost moist.
Soil Loam or sandy soil that is neutral to mildly fertile; prefers moist but well drained conditions and tolerates a range of soils.
Size and Habit
Height Variable depending on species and pruning, typically 25 to 60 cm with a bushy, spreading habit; vigorous and liable to spread rapidly in open ground so container growing is advisable.

Mint is a good source of vitamin C and B6 and pairs well with lamb, potatoes and sauces when used fresh.
Companion Planting and Avoidances
Good Companions Beets; broccoli; Brussels sprouts; cauliflower; tomatoes; squash.
Avoid Pairing With Parsley and Chamomile which may not perform well nearby.

Sowing Instructions

Sow thinly March to June (indoors March–April for surest results) in seed trays or small pots; cover seeds very lightly with fine compost, keep at 15 to 20°C and maintain even moisture. Once seedlings are established, thin or prick out and grow on in pots before planting into their final containers or site after the last frost.

Grow and Maintenance

Grow in a sunny or partly shaded site in containers or a confined bed to control spread. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially in containers, and feed lightly during the growing season. Trim or cut back to encourage bushy growth and prevent flowering if you want to maximise leaf production. Divide congested clumps or replace every few years to maintain vigour.
