Mimulus Extra Choice Seeds

A vibrant mix of Mimulus varieties selected for prolific, brightly coloured blooms and a compact, vigorous habit perfect for containers, hanging baskets and moist borders.

 

Extra Choice combines single and semi double flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red and bi colours with attractive foliage and a long flowering period.

Sow February to April under cover for summer display; direct sow May to June in mild sites

Germination 7 to 14 days at 15 to 20°C; seeds need light so surface sow or cover very thinly

Soil Moist, well drained loam or multi purpose compost enriched with organic matter; tolerant of consistently damp soils and suitable for margin planting by ponds

Height 15 to 30 cm depending on variety; compact, mounding or slightly trailing habit

Flowering Late spring through autumn; pinch back early growth to encourage bushiness and more flowers

Good Companions Lobelia; calibrachoa; ferns; salvia; moisture loving perennials and herbs

 

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Surface sow thinly into trays or modules February to April and press seeds gently onto the compost surface without covering; maintain even moisture and keep at 15 to 20°C. Prick out when large enough to handle and grow on in a bright, sheltered position before hardening off and planting out after risk of frost. For direct sowing choose May to June in prepared beds and thin to 20 to 30 cm apart for clumps or 8 to 12 cm in containers and baskets.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Keep soil consistently moist during establishment and throughout the flowering season; avoid waterlogging. Feed regularly with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support prolonged bloom. Deadhead lightly to encourage continuous flowering and trim back leggy growth to maintain compact habit.
